"Adopt a Shelter Pet" Stamps to Raise Awareness

Starting on April 30, 2010, the US Postal Service will be selling stamps to raise awareness of the need to adopt Shelter Pets. 

The USPS website states that the goal is for "more Americans to know about the millions of shelter pets that need good homes. Nearly half of the animals that enter animal shelters are euthanized. Many of these cats and dogs would have made a wonderful pet...if only given the chance."

They say:  "You can make a difference. Adopt a pet, volunteer at a shelter, or just get the word out by buying these stamps."

There are 10 different stamps.  All of these pets had been homeless.  At the time the pictures were taken, all but one had been adopted!  Featured on the stamps are:
Teddy Jack Russell Terrier
Willow Maltese Cat
Trevor Yellow Lab
Bianca Calico
Buddy Golden Retriever
Peaches Gray White and Tan Cat
Bindi Sue Aussie Shepherd
Frankie Black White and Tan Cat
Jake Boston Terrier
Lucas Orange Tabby

The USPS website offers a variety of products including stamps, mugs, artwork and notecards featuring these pets.

Ellen DeGeneres (Animal Advocate and co-owner of Halo Pet Food) is the spokeperson for this campaign.  Halo will be donating meals to feed 1 Million shelter pets.  You can visit stampstotherescue.com to see an update of how many meals Halo has donated to feed homeless pets.

Story in the Snow

It is cold here. Wicked cold! Temperatures are in the teens during the day, and the low at night is in the single digits!
So I always think of the wild birds and animals outside who may have trouble finding food.

On Saturday, I put out some bread for the birds and whoever else would want some.  Later, the bread was gone and I saw some bird footprints in the snow.  So I put out more bread.  Later, I peeked out and saw a Flicker (a woodpecker).

Doing a little snooping, I found several sets of footprints which tell an interesting story.

The first set of footprints (above) may belong

to the Mockingbirds that frequent the yard. I am not sure.

There are 3 toes in front and one in back.

Next, I saw an entirely different set of bird footprints.

There are 2 toes in front and 2 toes in back.

I am assuming these footprints belong to the Flicker.

Being a woodpecker and having to stand on trees,

they probably need to have a different type of foot than songbirds.

Then there were these little round footprints…

I think they belong to the squirrels who live in the oak trees.

I also saw a large footprint!  Was it Sasquatch?

No, it's only me!

Pretty interesting story. And well worth the price of a few pieces of bread!

Light A Candle

The Bad News and the Good News

The Bad News - Yesterday was a very somber day for America…and our thoughts and prayers are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by the tragic events at Fort Hood.

The Good News – There is an amazing number of people who are willing to help in any way they can.

Yesterday, I retweeted some information about how to help those injured at Fort Hood by donating blood and literally within minutes the word was being spread again, and again, and again on Twitter! There is no way to directly measure the impact of these tweets. But who knows how many people, who wouldn’t have known, saw the information in those tweets and donated blood. Or maybe someone with a rare blood type donated blood because of these tweets. Whenever I post a tweet, I don’t know if even one person will read it, so I am greatly humbled by the number of retweets.

There is great power in online communication and people are willing to help!

Sign the petition to allow up to a $3,500 tax deduction for qualifying pet cares expenses.
(Currently they have about 53,000 out of the needed 80,000 signatures.)
